Chapter 1– Arts Management Overview

An overview of a systems approach to the creative industries is discusses. Research resources for arts managers is outlined and there is an overview of types and levels of management found in arts organizations. An organizational mission, vision and core values statement is shown.

 

Chapter 2 – The Evolving Role of the Arts Manager

The historical origins of arts organizations is highlighted as well as profiling the evolution of arts management as a field. The steps required to start up an arts organization is outlined and an example of how to write a simple is covered. There are links to international art management information and the topic creative placemaking is explored.

 

Chapter 3 – Management History and Practice

The chapter is an overview of many of the key theories and people that contributed to the field of management. The basic concepts of systems and contingency management are introduced. Henry Mintzberg’s art, craft, and science perspective on management is touched on.

 

Chapter 4 – The Adaptive Arts Organization

The focus of the chapter is on the relationship of the arts organization to the many external forces that shape how our society functions today. The goal of this chapter remains to provoke thinking about what the future may bring. A new discussion topic has been added to the end of the chapter from Museumwatch 2013 entitled The Urban Renaissance.

 

Chapter 5 – Planning and the Arts

Sample mission statements are assessed for their effectiveness as a first step in a planning process. Information about the Balanced Scorecard and Scenario planning is covered and the chapter concludes with an example of an arts organization’s strategic plan.

 

Chapter 6 – Organization and the Arts

Organizational charts for several different types of arts organizations are shown and reviewed. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance merger ends the chapter as a discussion topic.

 

Chapter 7 – Human Resources and the Arts

Covers various methods for designing jobs, recruiting employees, selecting staff, and providing job enrichment. Also includes material on volunteers, boards of directors, independent contractor and internships. Sample union contract is included.

 

Chapter 8 – Leadership and the Arts

Covers leadership theory, including trait, behavior, and contingency leadership approaches, and group dynamics. Includes leader profile and a section on global perspectives on leadership and working with boards and running meetings. Chapter 13 – Integration of Managing and the Arts

How to integrate and develop an integrated system for applying the previous twelve chapters to managing and leading and arts organization is included. All of the learning objectives in the book are reviewed.

 

Chapter 14 – A Career in Arts Management

How to go about creating or enhancing your career path in arts management is covered. Issues related to using technology to enhance the job search are discussed.
