
William J. Byrnes is a Professor Emeritus of Arts Administration at Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah. He has more than four decades of experience in higher education management and administration and served in various leadership capacities at SUU, Florida State University, and Oberlin College. He started his career as a technical director and lighting designer and then moved into production management before shifting his focus to managing and producing.
He has served on several boards, including the Utah Shakespeare Festival and the ESTA Foundation, and has done consulting in the arts. He co-edited and contributed a chapter to The Routledge Companion to Arts Management published in 2019 and has written articles primarily focused on arts leadership. He has lectured on arts management in America, China, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Serbia, and Italy. Previous editions of his textbook Management and the Arts have been translated into four languages.
William is an Honorary Life-Time Member of the
United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). He served in various
leadership capacities in USITT since 1980, including as president from 2000 to
2002. In 2011 William received the Distinguished Achievement Award in
Management from USITT. He also received the Institute’s Founders Award in 1996
and was made a USITT Fellow in 1994.
