Management and the Arts Updates

Many of you may be starting a new academic year and are new to this book and its companion website. If you are, welcome. As you explore the website you will see I have tried to populate the “Learning Resources” section with a mix of additional materials to deepen your engagement with the field of arts management. By the way, if you come across websites, articles, or videos you think could enhance the content of the site, please let me know. I will be happy to add material for the benefit everyone.

Here are two items of interest I came across that could enhance your readings and discussion in the next week or so. The article about arts and culture funding in Denver could be applied to a number of chapters. Chapter 4 on the Adaptive Arts Organization, chapter 10 on Economics and Financial Management, and chapter 12 on Fundraising and Development intersect with the funding and cultural policy issues covered in the article.

The second story from the Nonprofit Quarterly offers some interesting discussion points about how the media handled the story and the aftermath of the contentious and prolonged labor strife involving the Minnesota Orchestra. Chapter 10 Economics, chapter 2 The Evolving Role of the Arts Manager, and chapter 4 The Adaptive Arts Organization resonate with the content in this story.

Last, but not least, please encourage your friends and colleagues to sign up for these Management and the Arts updates. Thanks.

Denver’s Contentious Arts and Culture Funding Splinters Community

By Maggie Hodge Kwan | August 24, 2015 – Nonprofit Quarterly

Denver’s regional approach to arts and culture funding was lauded when it was introduced in 1988, but today’s cultural leaders are upset about the inequity between Denver’s five heavyweight arts bodies and the rest of the region’s nearly 300 cultural organizations, reports the Colorado Independent.

Minnesota Media Chided for Coverage of MN Orchestra Musicians’ Raises

By Ruth McCambridge | August 24, 2015, Nonprofit Quarterly

This story is interesting because it exhibits the need to respond to inaccurate or misleading press reports when they provide a warped view of a local nonprofit—in this case, the Minnesota Orchestra.

Some of our readers will remember NPQ’s coverage of the lockout of the Minnesota Orchestra’s musicians in 2013 and 2014. A contract dispute with the musicians lasted a long 16 months and led to the resignation of the orchestra’s president and a number of board members. In the midst of all of this, donors and local elected officials got involved, and at a certain point, the orchestra’s control of its performance hall and its endowment appeared to be in question.
